Alzheimer's Association California Central Coast Chapter presents this free educational workshop for family caregivers. Topics will include common challenging behaviors that arise during holidays, holiday stress and grief, traveling with someone with dementia, and what to look for when visiting out of town elderly relatives.

The Alzheimer’s Association is offering a full-day conference for professionals on dementia to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of service in the Coachella Valley. The topics will cover information about Alzheimer’s disease, research, treatment, and skills for providing quality care to persons with memory impairment and their families. Keynote speakers will include Dr. Steven DeKosky, formerly chair of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and now dean of University of Virginia School of Medicine; and Dr. Cordula Dick-Muehlke, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Family Services Center in Huntington Beach, California. A third general session will feature a panel discussion on ethical issues in treating persons with dementia and decisional capacity.

Dr. Frank DeLaurentis, MD with Southwest Psychiatric Services in Orland Park, IL will examine the difference between dementia and depression. Define and differentiate the symptoms of depression and dementia, explain the various stages of dementia, know when to intervene and where to seek help when depression is suspected, identify the warning signs of early depression and educate on the levels of care for both illnesses

This staff training program, presented in partnership with the Illinois Department of Public Health, is primarily for staff of skilled nursing and assisted living facilities and meets requirements for initial Alzheimer's care training mandated by the State of Illinois.
